The Murder of Avery
This video was my favorite to put together. I finally felt comfortable with my team and my ability as a film maker. After a long summer I learned many lessons about the planning process, vision, and scope. Before this video started preproduction or filming we had a consultation.
After the failure of the SpeakEasy trailer we realized how important this consultation was to getting the film crew and production team on the same wavelength. That way everyone knew the vision and what needed to be accomplished.
This video got started early which meant we had some time to shoot what we needed and edit the video.
We learned in the first video that the cast likes to be called when they are needed and they like to adlib their scenes and so the structural elements that would have been put in place by Amir Pierre-Louis and I were not there.
There was however preproduction visuals provided by myself for Zack Diaz who would be taking over as director for reshoots and additional photography on filming day 2.
Filming
All of the shots were static but they did have to be captured up to 9 times for each of the possible assassins of Avery.
This meant a long shooting process with lots of coordination between actors.
Locations
The short film was shot entirely in the lobby of Read Quadrangle.
Editing
Editing was done completely by myself. I pitched a noir-esque vision to the event's planning team and they loved what I had come up with. It was complex but treated the viewer as intelligent and really got you intrigued about the interactive element.
The visuals to me were inspired by Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller.
Narration
The voiceover work was all done by me. The voiceover was completely adlibbed; made up on the spot. I tried to put myself in the shoes of this Sin City like detective that was acting as narrator for someone else's story. The detective had what was left of a southern accent. Playing at the idea of being raised in the south but long removed.
