Jammin' & Slammin'
The team that needed this video had a complicated vision for a complicated and seemingly disconnected weekend of events. The goal of the video was to get the musical and sport related concepts through to the viewer.
As the film maker I conducted one consultation with the group and brought only our writer Amir Pierre-Louis along to grasp the concept and ask the questions that I would not ask so that the vision for the trailer was clear.
I left casting, props, location, and timeline up to the group that needed the video.
The cast was extremely late to set. The location got changed day of. There was a confusion about who was bringing what items to set. The video only had a one day turn around and the overall vision was found to not be fleshed out enough for a thorough and easy to understand video.
Filming
The camera battery did not get plugged in and was not charged before recording.
It was really hot and there was no shade on set.
The camera overheated.
Locations
The video was shot on IU's campus at a basketball court next to Wilkie Quadrangle.
Editing
Editing was done completely by myself. Footage was sparse and had no naming conventions so it took a while to scrub through the footage.
Most edits are part of a VFX suit called Red Universe.
Learned
-
Establish the timeline as the filmmaker. Make sure it works for everyone.
-
Collect the props ahead of time.
-
Bring more of the staff that could be involved in the project in as a backup in case of emergencies. Especially when the project has such a quick turnaround.
-
If possible, reserve spaces and locations that are going to be used in film-making.
